- Commercial steel stud insulation is the same as standard insulation with
the exception that it is cut wider to fit snugly between steel
studs. Steel studs are thinner than wood studs.
- Since the steel stud is very thin metal as compared to a wooden
stud, a wider piece of insulation is required to fill the cavity
between the two steel studs. So for example, a standard R12 for
wood studs comes in both 15 inch and 23-inch widths, R12 steel
stud insulation comes in 16 and 24-inch widths.
- Don't use steel stud insulation in wood stud construction. It
is not designed to fit in common properly spaced wood stud centers..
- Putting standard insulation between properly centered steel
studs will leave spaces on both sides or one side of the batt
allowing for higher transfer of heat, higher loss of energy and
ultimately higher cost of heating or possible moisture problems
